The Québec City Convention Centre’s new work of art, D’un lieu à l’autre, winner in the Public Art category
The new work created for the Québec City Convention Centre expansion was recognized on December 11 at the 11th annual City of Québec Architectural Awards Gala held at Palais Montcalm.
Chantal Séguin’s staircase sculpture design, D’un lieu à l’autre, was selected in the public art category, and was created through the government’s arts and architecture integration policy (the “1% Act”)
D’un lieu à l’autre sets off the new stairway from the Convention Centre’s main lobby to the outside and references the site, the cityscape, and the life of the neighbourhood. It is made up of hanging stairs, ladder systems, and hundreds of upside-down metal figures frozen on the move. The concept probes and problematizes in-between, meeting, and transition areas by creating visually captivating space and looking at stairs from the standpoint of contemporary sculptural form.
In the jury’s words, “It has a powerful artistic impact. It is discreet yet flamboyant. The viewer stops, wonders, is energized by that void that informs, suffuses, and is evoked by the work.”
