More than 250 bariatric surgery specialists will meet at the Québec City Convention Centre May 27 and 28, 2016, for the International Consensus Conference on Duodenal Switch 2016 (ICCDS).
Québec City will welcome this two-day event thanks to two bariatric surgeons from Université Laval’s Québec Heart and Lung Institute. Dr Simon Biron and Dr Laurent Biertho worked closely with their Montréal colleague, Dr Michel Gagner, president of the American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), Canadian chapter. Dr Gagner performed the world’s first duodenal switch by laparoscopy in 1999.
The first day of the event will be dedicated to technical aspects, with 8 hours of live surgeries from around the World from renowned surgeons, and video of complex situations. The next day is dedicated to didactic sessions on nutrition and physiology of malabsorption, outcomes/results, management of side effects and complications, conversions/revisions.
The Conference is dedicated to the discussion of duodenal switch, a biliopancreatic bypass method, an operation performed and documented in Québec since 1990 to surgically treat severe obesity.
The ICCDS choose Québec City in part thanks to its historic charms. “Québec City, a unique North American walled city founded in 1608, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a European flair, should provide the surroundings for an excellent social program as well” said Michel Gagner on ICCDS’s Website.
