A group of Québec City sedimentology researchers headed up by Professor Pierre Francus of the INRS Centre Eau Terre Environnement will host the 20th International Sedimentological Congress (ISC 2018) at the Québec City Convention Centre in 2018. More than 800 earth science specialists from around the world will make a “Sedimentary Journey through 3 Billion Years in the New World” from August 13 to 17 and discuss the latest advances in the broad field sedimentology.
Professor Pierre Francus, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Environmental Sedimentology, a tier-1 Canada research chair, has agreed to organize this large-scale scientific event in Québec City with the assistance of five of his fellow researchers. The Congress returns to Canada after a 36-year absence, having been held on four continents—Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America—since the 1982 event in Hamilton. The expected 5,700 person-nights generated by the Congress at local hotels will have an impact on Québec City’s economy estimated at $3 million.
The local organizing committee is made up of specialists from Université Laval, INRS, and the Quebec Division of the Geological Survey of Canada and has put together five days of oral and poster presentations grouped into thematic sessions. Day excursions and a series of field trips to Canadian and U.S. sites will take place both before and after the Congress.
Dr. Francus received support from Québec’s Ambassadors’ Club to travel to the October 2017 International Meeting of Sedimentology in Toulouse to promote the Québec City ISC. Further promotion took place at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Seattle.
The ISC Congress is held every four years under the auspices of the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS), whose 2,000 members represent 100 countries, with national correspondents in more than 50 of them. The 2018 Congress in Québec City will also be sponsored for the first time by SEPM (Society for Sedimentary Geology).
