Gold Level LEED Certification for the Québec City Convention Centre

Press releases Sustainability

The Québec City Convention Centre, already recognized for its leadership in sustainable development, is proud to add a new environmental certification to its collection in the form of LEED® Canada-CI (commercial interiors) gold level

The Canada Green Building Council attests that the Québec City Convention Centre has met its very exacting environmental standards in building and outfitting its 73,000 square feet addition.

“More than ever the environment is coming to be recognized as the key global issue of our time,” said Québec City Convention Centre president and CEO Pierre-Michel Bouchard. “The Paris Climate Change Conference currently underway reflects this. For us, it’s important that the facilities and services we provide to our clientele meet the highest environmental standards, and for years we’ve been redoubling our efforts in sustainable development. This LEED certification of the new part of our Centre shows it’s working,” he concluded.

The review for certification covers six environmental categories: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process.

The project was particularly noted for outstanding performance in the following areas:
•    Energy consumption: 21.31% lower than that of base-case buildings
•    Water consumption: 40.72% lower than standard
•    Construction waste management: 83.15% diverted from landfill

The efforts made to maintain exemplary interior air quality for those working on the project were also praised, as was the high percentage of construction materials and furnishings produced close to the site and, in the innovation category, the environmental education program.

LEED Canada-CI (Commercial Interiors) certification is added to the silver level LEED-EB (existing building) certification, Level 3 BOMA BESt (Building Environmental Standards) certification, and gold level AIPC (International Association of Convention Centres) Quality Standards certification already held by the Centre.
